Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, can be performed on any part of the nose. This commonly performed procedure can be used to increase or reduce the size of the nose, to modify its bridge or tip, or to alter its slope or angle. Some patients who visit our Tennessee practice also seek surgery to correct a deformity from injury or to improve breathing. Your consultation with Dr. Young will include computer imaging of your face to illustrate changes you can reasonably expect from rhinoplasty surgery.
More technically referred to as "rhinoplasty," nose surgery is a delicate procedure in which Tennessee plastic surgeon Dr. Young meticulously reshapes the patient's nose to appear more complementary to the face. Most ideal candidates for nose surgery are patients who are 15 years and older, and would like to change features within the nose such as:
In most rhinoplasty procedures, the skin of the nose is cut and lifted away from the bone and cartilage framework beneath, which is then shaped and sculpted as desired. The skin is then re-draped over the "new" framework, and a splint is applied to help your nose maintain its reshaped form. In some cases, soft splints may be inserted in the nostrils to provide additional stability and are removed one week after you undergo rhinoplasty surgery at our Tennessee practice.
Following rhinoplasty, bruising, swelling, and discomfort are to be expected, but all can be minimized with cold compresses and medication prescribed by Dr. Young. The most visible swelling and bruising usually disappear within one to two weeks after rhinoplasty surgery. External splints and sutures are removed in a week, and you can usually return to work or non-strenuous activities within a week. Strenuous activities may be resumed in two to three weeks.
