As you age, wrinkled, creased skin can develop on the face, neck, or forehead, along with fat deposits and folds along the jaw line and under the chin. While a facelift can't stop the aging process, it can "turn back the clock" seven to ten years. When the facelift procedure is performed by a surgeon with Dr. Young's experience and eye for aesthetics, the results of a facelift can be remarkably discreet and natural looking, as well.
Depending on the area to be treated at our Nashville Tennessee practice, a facelift usually involves making incisions in creases around the ears and into the hair. Once the skin is lifted from the area to be treated, excess fat is then removed and the deep muscle tissue is tightened. Finally, the skin is repositioned, tightened, and secured. Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common with facelifts and usually lasts between 10 and 14 days. After 10 days, the patient may camouflage any lingering discoloration with make-up. Two weeks after undergoing the procedure, the Nashville facelift patient has generally recovered and is able to resume non-strenuous activities. The mid-face is the area of the cheeks below the eyes and to the sides of the nose. Aging of this area typically results in a flat or hollowed appearance below the eyes, lengthening of the lower eyelids, and development of a furrow dividing the cheek into two parts. At our Nashville TN practice, the lifting of the mid-face is frequently performed with a conventional facelift (cheek-neck lift) and is especially beneficial if you have had a facelift years ago and think you are ready for a tuck-up procedure. The result is an improved contour of the cheeks and shorter, more youthful-appearing lower eyelids.
Men and women who are seeing the signs of aging in their eyes often wish to regain a more youthful and alert appearance. With the help of eyelid surgery (“blepharoplasty”), patients may achieve a more refreshed look. This procedure can be performed on the upper, lower or both eyelids. Based on your particular needs and your surgeon’s recommendation, fat, tissue, and skin can be removed in order to achieve your desired results. Post-surgery, patients may anticipate some swelling, bruising, and discomfort; however, this usually subsides within a few days and patients may return to work in one week. As with all surgical procedures, there are some risks but are typically minimal. So long as you follow the surgeon’s instructions, complications and negative side effects can be avoided. Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, can be performed on any part of the nose. This commonly performed procedure can be used to increase or reduce the size of the nose, to modify its bridge or tip, or to alter its slope or angle. Some patients who visit our Tennessee practice also seek surgery to correct a deformity from injury or to improve breathing. Your consultation with Dr. Young will include computer imaging of your face to illustrate changes you can reasonably expect from rhinoplasty surgery.
In most rhinoplasty procedures, the skin of the nose is cut and lifted away from the bone and cartilage framework beneath, which is then shaped and sculpted as desired. The skin is then re-draped over the "new" framework, and a splint is applied to help your nose maintain its reshaped form. In some cases, soft splints may be inserted in the nostrils to provide additional stability and are removed one week after you undergo rhinoplasty surgery at our Tennessee practice.
Following rhinoplasty, bruising, swelling, and discomfort are to be expected, but all can be minimized with cold compresses and medication prescribed by Dr. Young. The most visible swelling and bruising usually disappear within one to two weeks after rhinoplasty surgery. External splints and sutures are removed in a week, and you can usually return to work or non-strenuous activities within a week. Strenuous activities may be resumed in two to three weeks. Forehead lifts, or browlifts, are usually performed under general anaesthesia in an outpatient setting.
The most common method, the endoscopic browlift, is performed through three small incisions above the forehead just behind the hairline. Dr. Young then elevates the forehead and brows to a more desirable position, maintaining a natural looking brow. Sometimes muscles between the brows can be cut to diminish frown lines. This is all done without removing scalp or hair. Endoscopic browlifts may be performed alone or along with other procedures such as a facelifts or eyelid surgery.
Not every patient is a candidate for an endoscopic browlift; however, other approaches can be used to elevate the brow to a more desirable position. The best approach for a browlift will be addressed during the consultation. Some of our Tennessee patients opt to undergo a facelift or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) at our Nashville practice in conjunction with a browlift to achieve the best possible results from their cosmetic surgery. Most patients are on their feet within a couple of days of undergoing the procedure and are able to return to their normal routines in about 10 days.
A chin augmentation can create a more balanced profile by strengthening a weak, receding chin or widening a small chin. An extensive variety of chin implant shapes and materials are available to permit Dr. Young to reshape the chin to the optimal contours. The procedure involves placing the implant in a pocket created over the bone of the chin. Post-operative swelling, bruising, and discomfort generally subside in just a few days. At our Tennessee practice, chin contouring and rhinoplasty are often performed together to restore balance to a patient's face.
Cheek augmentation can improve the contour of the middle of the face. It can be used to create higher, more prominent cheekbones, helping to restore the youthful fullness of the cheeks. During the procedure, a cheek implant is positioned through an incision in the mouth under the upper lip. Post-operative swelling usually lasts between 10 - 14 days. There is usually minor discomfort, which can be relieved by medication prescribed by Dr. Young.
Probably no advance in medicine has had more of an impact than the development of laser surgery. Lasers work by emitting a powerful beam of light, which causes a superficial burn of the skin. As new living cells replace the layers of dead skin cells, the skin tightens and grows back smoother with fewer wrinkles. Laser resurfacing is effective for improving sun-damaged skin, wrinkles, mild acne scarring, age spots, skin discolorations, and facial scars.
At our Tennessee practice, laser resurfacing is usually performed under general anaesthesia in an outpatient surgery facility. Patients tolerate the procedure well and experience only mild discomfort during the first few days of the recovery period, which usually lasts approximately 10 - 14 days. Following laser resurfacing, patients are able to wear make-up to camouflage the pinkness of the skin, which lasts for about eight weeks. Please contact our Tennessee practice with additional questions about laser resurfacing.
